Weaknesses[]

• Mortality — Nephilim are still half-human, possess human-like souls, and still experience human weaknesses. They’re stronger than any other being, except angels, who can mostly overpower them with their might unless the Nephilim is the offspring of a significant angel, such as an angel of the first sphere (Thrones, Cherubim and Seraphim).
• Heaven’s Enmity — Angels and God regard the Nephilim as the worst kind of abomination, more detestable than even demons. An angel will always react negatively to a Nephilim, and will always interpret the Nephilim’s words and actions in the worst possible light. Only a direct order from the deity they serve will ever cause an angel to aid a Nephilim in any way. Nephilim can not benefit from healing or other miracles from angels.
• Angelic Wrath — When a Nephilim is furious, their power becomes unstable. Since a major aspect of their strength comes from their rage, this could give them an advantage over deities. However, it’s a double edge sword that leaves the Nephilim blacked out once that power is far beyond their control.
• Hunted — Nephilim are viewed as a disgrace and a complete mistake to every normal angel, making them a prime subject for hunting. There are entire choirs of angels dedicated to the extermination of Nephilim.
• Magic — Nephilim are still mortal and are, as such, still vulnerable to the workings of magic in all its forms. Witches are able to give supernatural aneurysms that cause the blood vessels of Nephilim to explode, and extremely powerful Witches can even overpower them effortlessly. Black magic has an adverse effect on them, and they’re able to be trapped inside of an pentagram or magic circle which weakens their powers to a point where they’re no stronger than a normal human.

Myths & Legends[]

The term «Nephilim» occurs twice in the Hebrew Bible, both in the Torah. The first is Genesis 6:1-4, immediately before the story of Noah’s ark:

When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”

The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.

Genesis tells of the Nephilim before and after the Flood, most notably in the Hebrew Bible. According to Genesis 7:23, the Nephilim were destroyed in the Flood, but Nephilim are reported after the Flood, including:

• the Anakites
• the Emites
• the Amorites
• the Rephaites

Large as Giants

The second appearance of the Nephilim in is Numbers 13:32-33, where the Hebrew spies report that they have seen fearsome giants in Canaan:

And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”

In Amos 2:9, while not using the word «nephilim», Yahweh reminds the prophet that he «destroyed the Amorites before you, whose height was as the height of cedar trees». Genesis 6:4 says «the nephilim were on the earth in those days (before the Flood), and also after», and most later compositions and translations, including the Septuagint, therefore understand the nephilim to be giants.

The «Mighty Fallen» and «Ancient Warriors»

Ezekiel 32:27 speaks of «the fallen mighty (gibborim nophelim, >גִּבֹּורִים , >נֹפְלִים) of the uncircumcised, which are gone down (yaradu, >יָרְדֽוּ) to the grave with their weapons of war»; a change to the vowels would produce the reading gibborim nephilim. The nature of the nephilim is complicated by the ambiguity of Genesis 6:4, «the sons of God joined with the daughters of mankind, who bore them children — they were the ancient warriors, the men of renown», which leaves it unclear whether they are the «Sons of God» or their offspring who are the «ancient warriors». Richard Hess in The Anchor Bible Dictionary takes it as read that the nephilim are the offspring, as does P. W. Coxon in Dictionary of deities and demons in the Bible.

Diablo III[]

Элохим нефилим — сын богини. В другом переводе «Элохим» означает «светлый».

In the Bible

The first reference to the Nephilim appears quite early in the Bible, found in Genesis 6:1–4, which describes the origin of the Nephilim as part of the “increasing wickedness of mankind.» These beings co-existed with humankind until the flood with a moral orientation:

«When men began to multiply on earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of heaven saw how beautiful the daughters of man were, and so they took for their wives as many of them as they chose. Then the Lord said: “My spirit shall not remain in man forever, since he is but flesh. His days shall comprise one hundred and twenty years.” At that time the Nephilim appeared on earth (as well as later), after the sons of heaven had intercourse with the daughters of man, who bore them sons. They were heroes of old, men of renown.»

The Book of Numbers (13:33) also contains an allusion to the Nephilim in how the Israelites likened the tall aborigines (“Anakim”) to the Nephilim, possibly due to seeing the “megalithic structures” of Canaan that appeared to have been built by a race of giants, whose superhuman strength was attributed to semi-divine origin.

The Letter of Jude draws upon the statements set forth in Genesis, referring implicitly to the paternity of Nephilim as heavenly beings who came to earth and had sexual intercourse with women:

«The angels too, who did not keep to their own domain but deserted their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains, in gloom, for the judgement of the great day. Likewise, Sodom, Gomorrah, and the surrounding towns, which, in the same manner as they, indulged in sexual promiscuity and practiced unnatural vice, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.»

However, the phrase “practiced unnatural vice”—translated literally as “went after alien flesh”—refers to the desires for sexual intimacies by human beings with angels, which is the reverse of the account in Genesis, where heavenly beings (angels) sought after human flesh.

Rephaim

«Rephaim» is a general title that the Book of Joshua states was given to the aborigines who were afterwards conquered and dispossessed by the Canaanite tribes). The text states that a few Rephaim had survived, one of them being Og, the king of Bashan. Og of Bashan is recorded as having a 13-foot-long bed.

«Only Og king of Bashan was left of the remnant of the Rephaites. His bed was made of iron and was more than thirteen feet long and six feet wide. It is still in Rabbah of the Ammonites.»

The Rephaim may have been the same Canaanite group known to the Moabites as Emim, i.e., fearful, and to the Ammonites as Zamzummim. The second of the Books of Samuel states that some of them found refuge among the Philistines, and were still existing in the days of David. Nothing is known of their origin, nor of anything specifically connecting them with Nephilim, though the connection is made by Jewish tradition.

Anakim

Anakim are the descendants of Anak, and dwelt in the south of Canaan, in the neighborhood of Hebron. In the days of Abraham, they inhabited the region afterwards known as Edom and Moab, east of the Jordan river. They are mentioned during the report of the spies about the inhabitants of the land of Canaan. The book of Joshua states that Joshua finally expelled them from the land, excepting a remnant that found a refuge in the cities of Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod. The Philistine giant Goliath, whom David, or Elhanan, later encountered, was supposedly a descendant of the Anakim.

«The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height. And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.»

The Sumerians called their gods the Anunaki; according to a Midrash, Abraham was the son of an idol manufacturer in the Sumerian city of Ur, and so could reasonably be expected to have known about these gods. Whether via the knowledge of a historical Abraham, or via folk memory that passed down to the Yahwist, the words Anak and its plural (Anakim) could simply be corrupted versions of Anunaki; this would equate the Nephilim with the Sumerian demigods such as Gilgamesh.

Note that it is more commonly suggested by traditional Jewish sources (such as the Midrash) that the spies saw large and powerful inhabitants in Canaan and because of their own fears, cowardice, and inadequate faith in Yahweh, saw themselves as grasshoppers in the eyes of the Canaanites, whether they were actual ‘giants’ or not.

Legends and Stories

It is hard to find stories directly surrounding the Nephilim. Most examples are assumed, meaning that documentation of the race is not very detailed. Here are some stories believed to be about members of the Nephilim race.

David and Goliath

If you’ve heard of the story of David and Goliath, you know that Goliath was referred to as a giant. Many believe that he was a descendent of the Nephilim. But his size was no match for David’s courage and determination.

The Israelites and the Philistines were preparing for battle. David’s brothers were in the army but David was too small and young. He tended to the sheep instead. One day, his father asked him to deliver food to his brothers. He set out to the battle field, only to find that everyone was cowering in fear because of Goliath.

The giant’s words angered David and he told everyone he would fight Goliath with God by his side. The King and the army were concerned about the battle but David was relentless in his desires. The day came for the battle. David gathered five smooth stones and placed one in his sling and the rest in his pocket. Goliath taunted the boy and ran towards him. David shot the first stone at the giant. It hit him right between the eyes, knocking the giant to the ground. Before he could react, David cut off Goliath’s head with a giant sword. David’s battle victory led to the Israelites overall victory.

Gilgamesh

Gilgamesh was the main character of an ancient poem written between 2700 BC and 600 BC in Mesopotamia. He was described as half god and half human, leading most to classify him as a Nephilim. He was king of Uruk but he did not lead his people with honor. Instead, he wreaked havoc on the city and the people begged the gods to help.

The gods created Endiku, part beast and part human. Endiku lived in the forest but he was told of a disturbing ritual by someone passing through. When couples were wed, Gilgamesh had the right to spend the evening with the new bride, before her husband was able to. This bothered Endiku and he headed to Uruk to protect a woman who was getting married. Gilgamesh and Endiku fought. Gilgamesh won but the two ended up becoming friends. They had many adventures together but ended up offending the gods. It was decided that one must die and Enkidu fell ill and eventually passed, leaving Gilgamesh to continue his less than noble rulings.

The Children of God looked down upon the humans of earth and they found them fair. But it was forbidden for the sons of God to leave Heaven and walk the Earth. They were overcome with lust for the daughters of men and they greatly desired them. And so a group among them conspired to leave Heaven and go down to Earth.

They left their place from on high. They left the gates of Heaven behind them, and they descended to the Earth. Those who left the hosts of Heaven to walk upon Earth among men became known as the Nephilim. Such children, and their descendants. The Nephilim however were far too powerful for their human mothers. As a result the mother of a Nephilim died during birth.

To show their acceptance of the Nephilim they gifted them with angel life spans and human souls. They also allowed the fallen angel’s powers to be passed down to the Nephilim, however, were generally not able to be accessed until their 18th year.

These children of the Nephilim were proud. They became great leaders among men. They undertook to teach their mortal brethren the secrets reserved for the gods. They taught men the art of warfare and how to make weapons in fire. They taught men how to adorn themselves. The art of cosmetics and the wearing of jewelry they taught them. They taught men the secrets of healing herbs and how to call spirits by name. They taught men how to read signs in the Heavens. Various omens and divinings they taught them. They taught men how to bring forth water in the desert and how to make plants yield bountiful fruit. All the arts and the sciences which the gods had forbidden they taught to men. They taught them the secrets of living things, that the spirit of a living body resides in its blood, and by partaking of blood, the partaker of the blood gains the power of the creature whose life is in the blood.

The sons of God took to wife the daughters of men and they impregnated them. The children were part divine and part mortal and they grew rapidly and to great stature. Their bodies were fair and smooth of limb-like their angelic parents, and their minds were keen. Their eyes looked upon the worlds of both Heaven and Earth. The mysteries hidden from men were revealed to their divine sight.

When God looked down upon the Earth, he saw men living like gods. The Lord grew angry. He saw that men no longer poured the blood sacrifices upon the altar but kept the life of the blood to increase their own strength. He saw the men with the tools of the gods, making the Earth bountiful as only the gods should do. He saw them piercing the mysteries of the heavens so that their knowledge of themselves and their world rivaled that of the gods. And he saw them with great weapons of war, weapons which only the gods kept for themselves, and he grew afraid.

God saw the Nephilim amongst the children of men, teaching them. And he saw that the Nephilim had become great leaders of men. And he feared that Nephilim would lead the children of men to the very gates of Heaven to reclaim the realm forsaken by their fathers.

And so God undertook to punish the Nephilim and wipe their seed from all the Earth. Yet they had so intertwined themselves with the children of men that nearly all men bore the Nephilim’s taint. So God hardened his heart against all mankind and therefore determined to kill every last one.
